For reasons I can’t fully explain (like many pandemic hobbies) I started making giant 4’ felt fish.
Armed with bushels of felt (thanks Oxford Pennant) and a free Cricut Maker 3.0 (thanks Cricut) I just started making.
common questions:
Q: Do you sell the fish or do commissions?
A: YES. Contact me for options.
Q: How long did it take you?
A: Each one gets progressively more complex. The first couple took 40-50 hours. The flower fish took closer to 100 hours.
Q: Where’d you get the felt?
A: Oxford Pennant has been an amazing partner and hooked me up with scrap felt.
Q: What do you use to cut the felt?
A: Cricut Maker 3.0
Q: Where did you get the pattern?
A: I didn’t. I drew it all up in illustrator. (That being said, I did grab a few felt flower patterns from various ETSY vendors)
Q: What inspires you?
A: People ask if there’s a source of inspiration for the fish. In the early 18th century, publisher, bookseller, and apparent fish enthusiast Louis Renard compiled the seminal compendium of color-illustrated ichthyological studies. The volume contains more than 450 species rendered in vibrant hues that, while somewhat anatomically accurate, feature embellishments in color and characteristics. From beak-like mouths to extraordinarily patterned skins, the vast illustrations of marine life are unusual, bizarre, and sometimes psychedelic. Check him out if you like strange sea creatures.
